About Aya Nambu

Watch animation

My work is primarily materialized form of my questions, sensations and thoughts on existence. The concepts or ideas in my work are developed from my own experiences as "a form of existence". The following lines are taken from one of articles I wrote previously.

"Those works are the results of my challenge to embody the sensations that I feel in response and relationship to the external world; my experience of 'being' in the world. The sensation that the 'core' of my existence was separate from, yet within, the physicality of my body has always been the starting point in my working processes."

I was originally trained in traditional drawing and painting and later also developed skills in hand-drawn and digital illustration. The experiences gradually led me to work with three dimensional medium which has been central to my practice ever since. Having made two short stop-frame animations recently, I have now become even more interested in animation making. I am currently studying at Central Saint Martin School of Art, London, and undertaking public and private commissions.

As I am constantly experimenting and exploring in the area of stop-frame animation it is rather slow progress, however, the outcome from the experiences and failures are most beneficial and valuable.

The invisible man

My next animation project is at early stages of progression. The idea for the animation is to animate an invisible figure by animation effects that the presence of his body causes on his surroundings, such as the surface of sofa sinking down (by his body weight) as he sits down.

'The Room'

The Room

The piece I am currently working on is a half-size model of a room with figure shapes (of models of my body) hollowed out on the inside walls, like 'imprints' of the body on the walls. The bodies are firstly modelled in clay from photos then plaster casts are taken around them.
